Since I am just starting this blog I am still in the configuration stage so I am not going to start the business and political section right away. My first post is going to be regarding “Gracie Combatives.” I have read through everything that I can find on it and so far I m really enjoying “rolling” with my friends. There are a couple parts to the arguments that the critics online have presented.
If you visit http://www.gracieuniversity.com you can check out what the program is all about. All the complaints that people were crying about was the fact that people could get a bluebelt without ever actually getting down and dirty. To be honest with you I totally agree with this. It is common knowledge that the Gracies want to keep students coming to the schools, so this can basically get you ready for the school. Another thing that has been made very clear is that this is not designed for tournament jiu-jitsu, but more for street toughs and people not prepared to grapple. For this thought, the main point is that dont agree to someone getting a blue belt if they’ve never rolled, nor do I think that the online system will rank you higher even if you do.
For me it all started on a couple buzzed nights with friends. My friend Dan basically said he had been training, so it was in my interest to challenge him since he is similar to my size. He actually beat my face in (figuratively) that night. Though I feel I had a legitimate excuse I became determined to get better so that doesn’t happen to me. A couple weeks later nothing had really changed but Dan had a get together at his house and all the mats were there along with Dans/Our trainer, Jonathon. Another night of beating basically went down and I armbarred Dan.
That is when I actually went to the class that a bunch of my friends started at his local warehouse. I came in 5th into the class that we created. That is one of the main reasons that I love the Gracie Program. We are able to open a Gracie Garage with minimal investment. They may have done more, but I have ran 2 classes there so far and this week we are starting twice a week. The way the program is set up the certified instructor will be able to promote us through the white belt stripes and then someone from the academy will come out to do the test or you can do 5, 5 minute videos that will be reviewed by the instructors at the academy.
The program to get to the blue belt consists of 36 common moves with 130 variations that will get you “street ready.” I think I am somewhat “street ready” but I want to hone an art into my psyche so I can potentially compete. I like this for a couple reasons. Though nothing in the program requires fighting with your partners, I think that most people do. There is no point if you dont. I love getting beat on and I like doing the beatings because it will help you get lean and it will also eventually help you when you need it.
I have been sore from the last couple classes but this section is ideally going to act as a log through my training and how everything unfolds. I plan on including pictures and video I become more technical with WordPress
