Guide to Starting a Sole Proprietorship – Part 1

August 29, 2010

So recently I have been tasked with setting up a business. I had no idea what I was doing, but after a couple months of going back and forth, I think I can break it down into the necassary steps. Obviously the first thing that you will want to do is determine what form of business you would like to start. Corporations and Limited Liability Companies are legal entities, so your assets are seperate from the company, making your personal possessions safe. That is the bottom line on that one, if you are going to be in something where you could potentially be sued, then you should consider the Corp. or LLC.

I am setting up Hentsch Enterprises as a base hub for my personal operations. In business I believe that it is important to market yourself, so this is a huge step. My company started April 1 2010. The reason why I find this important is because now I have been operating this business for over 5 months. When I get done working through marketing at corporations and other businesses, my consulting business has already been established for a long time. This will help with credit, credibility, and just overall appearance. I also established a reseller account to work out some retail ideas that I have.

So, step one.. Visit these sites and learn about the benefits and costs associated with the different business models:

- Sole Proprietorship
- Corporation
- Limited Liability Company

Gracie Combatives – One Month Completed + Video

So here we are one month into the Gracie Combatives courses that we have been having. I have to say, training with people your size and bigger really makes a huge difference. I am a pretty big guy so when someone dominates me you know your gunna get stronger. I find that people my own size and bigger make me feel like I am suffocating after a few minutes of battle.

Though this is probably due to bad cardio I am trying to stay calm and conserve energy throughout most these bouts. So month one. I am not really that impressed with myself. I want to learn a lot more. The thing about the program is that there is so many steps that if you forget one the move may be rendered ineffective. I like the fact that one of my friends is practicing his camera skills on us because it is showing me a lot of the main problems. For instance, when doing the armbar in practice the person is letting you armbar him. It is important to be slightly aggressive in the hook and to keep it tight when executing.

Everyone else is progressing well. We are working right now to get a Gracie Garage, and eventually, a certified Training center going in the San Gabriel Valley. I recently purchased the Gracie Combatives DVD instructional course to supplement when our instructor is unavailable. We are also working out of one of my buddies warehouses so if he bails we are all screwed!

I want to start practicing on the mats in the grass, outside. I think that will make it a little more enjoyable also. The most important thing our instructor is doing is pushing us a little harder than they do at commercial places. I like the fast track. I am going to print all the pages for the courses so I can start logging my sessions to make it more like the HQ in Torrance. We also have 3-4 hour sessions. This is really important in increasing cardio and maximizing time. Everyone is busy and 2 3-hour sessions really make it manageable.

If anyone around is interested in coming out please shoot me an email. We have a really great group of guys and there is no tough guy antics. Everything we do we take turns on eachother, and you do not have to engage in any “sparring” unless you want too.

I have a lot of work to do though. Still a long road ahead.. ugh!!

Oil in the Gulf = BIG step back for petrol independancy

April 29, 2010

The most recent news is indicating that the rate in which the oil is leaking into the Gulf of MexChris Graythen/Getty Imagesico is closer to 5,000 barrels a day rather than the initial 1,000. Surfing over the last couple updates it appears that the pollution has already reached land. There is even a comparison to the Exxon-Valdez spill back when I was a kid. The fact is that I dont really need the details to predict a couple of events that will procede after this plays out.

Anyone who is against offshore drilling are going to win this one. Why? Well it is going to start with coverage. Then the envirnmentalists are going to get all over this, and then after we see the cost and damage caused to our beatiful land people will recant on the idea of increasing the chances of this occuring. I can see the photos of the animals on the shore dying/dead. Those photos and videos are emotional and tough for anyone. I really don’t care to see any of that either. Just so I don’t seem so cold, I would like to say that though this is a terrible occurence reality is reality.

The plans for offshore sites here in California are pretty much gone and I doubt any other state is going be doing anything either unless they are already in the process. We can mark this date as the beginning of the next oil bubble. Though the economy is slow, it is obviously recovering. The fact that as prices remain somewhat low the public will lose interest in energy independance. That will give OPEC their chance to take advantage of us again.

I am not pleased with this situation in the slightest. I agree with the environmentalists and the healthy well being of our land too but I think we needed to press on the campaign to use more home grown energy resources. This will slow or, potentially, cripple the entire effort.

Of course this won’t necassarily effect the nuclaer, wind, solar and the various other sources that we are working on. But the problem is in the short term-medium- and still, long term mobility of the country. Gas prices were just $4.50 per gallon and just 1.5 years later we are experiencing a huge set back in the plans to stop that. The country runs off gasoline and until that changes (ALOT) we are going to pay for this accident in more ways than I can count on my hand.

Jiu Jitsu- Gracie Combatives

April 20, 2010

Since I am just starting this blog I am still in the configuration stage so I am not going to start the business and political section right away. My first post is going to be regarding “Gracie Combatives.” I have read through everything that I can find on it and so far I m really enjoying “rolling” with my friends. There are a couple parts to the arguments that the critics online have presented.

If you visit http://www.gracieuniversity.com you can check out what the program is all about. All the complaints that people were crying about was the fact that people could get a bluebelt without ever actually getting down and dirty. To be honest with you I totally agree with this. It is common knowledge that the Gracies want to keep students coming to the schools, so this can basically get you ready for the school. Another thing that has been made very clear is that this is not designed for tournament jiu-jitsu, but more for street toughs and people not prepared to grapple. For this thought, the main point is that  dont agree to someone getting a blue belt if they’ve never rolled, nor do I think that the online system will rank you higher even if you do.

For me it all started on a couple buzzed nights with friends. My friend Dan basically said he had been training, so it was in my interest to challenge him since he is similar to my size. He actually beat my face in (figuratively) that night. Though I feel I had a legitimate excuse I became determined to get better so that doesn’t happen to me. A couple weeks later nothing had really changed but Dan had a get together at his house and all the mats were there along with Dans/Our trainer, Jonathon.  Another night of beating basically went down and I armbarred Dan.

That is when I actually went to the class that a bunch of my friends started at his local warehouse. I came in 5th into the class that we created. That is one of the main reasons that I love the Gracie Program. We are able to open a Gracie Garage with minimal investment. They may have done more, but I have ran 2 classes there so far and this week we are starting twice a week. The way the program is set up the certified instructor will be able to promote us through the white belt stripes and then someone from the academy will come out to do the test or you can do 5, 5 minute videos that will be reviewed by the instructors at the academy.

The program to get to the blue belt consists of 36 common moves with 130 variations that will get you “street ready.” I think I am somewhat “street ready” but I want to hone an art into my psyche so I can potentially compete. I like this for a couple reasons. Though nothing in the program requires fighting with your partners, I think that most people do. There is no point if you dont. I love getting beat on and I like doing the beatings because it will help you get lean and it will also eventually help you when you need it.

I have been sore from the last couple classes but this section is ideally going to act as a log through my training and how everything unfolds. I plan on including pictures and video I become more technical with WordPress
