So here we are one month into the Gracie Combatives courses that we have been having. I have to say, training with people your size and bigger really makes a huge difference. I am a pretty big guy so when someone dominates me you know your gunna get stronger. I find that people my own size and bigger make me feel like I am suffocating after a few minutes of battle.
Though this is probably due to bad cardio I am trying to stay calm and conserve energy throughout most these bouts. So month one. I am not really that impressed with myself. I want to learn a lot more. The thing about the program is that there is so many steps that if you forget one the move may be rendered ineffective. I like the fact that one of my friends is practicing his camera skills on us because it is showing me a lot of the main problems. For instance, when doing the armbar in practice the person is letting you armbar him. It is important to be slightly aggressive in the hook and to keep it tight when executing.
Everyone else is progressing well. We are working right now to get a Gracie Garage, and eventually, a certified Training center going in the San Gabriel Valley. I recently purchased the Gracie Combatives DVD instructional course to supplement when our instructor is unavailable. We are also working out of one of my buddies warehouses so if he bails we are all screwed!
I want to start practi
cing on the mats in the grass, outside. I think that will make it a little more enjoyable also. The most important thing our instructor is doing is pushing us a little harder than they do at commercial places. I like the fast track. I am going to print all the pages for the courses so I can start logging my sessions to make it more like the HQ in Torrance. We also have 3-4 hour sessions. This is really important in increasing cardio and maximizing time. Everyone is busy and 2 3-hour sessions really make it manageable.
If anyone around is interested in coming out please shoot me an email. We have a really great group of guys and there is no tough guy antics. Everything we do we take turns on eachother, and you do not have to engage in any “sparring” unless you want too.
I have a lot of work to do though. Still a long road ahead.. ugh!!
